RP Sample: It was a warm morning, so I decided to go find myself some breakfast. It had been pretty difficult to find good live mice lately. It would take a while to find some food. I didn’t want to have to resort to roadkill. No one wants that. I caught a thermal—that’s a column of warm air rising from the ground—and soared over some houses. I knew, somewhere, can’t be bothered to remember where, was my aunt’s house. I don’t live there anymore. The sky is my home now.
And by now you’re probably wondering why and how I live in the sky and eat mice. That’s not exactly normal. I guess I could have once been called normal, once upon a time. But I’m no longer that skinny 14 year old with the messy dirtyblond hair that got picked on a lot and was carted between an aunt and an uncle who cared nothing about him. That was a long time ago, well actually, a few months but it seems like forever ago.
It all started one day when I met up with Jake and his friend Marco. Jake’s a cool guy. I knew him from school because one day these guys had been giving me swirlies in the toilet bowl and then Jake came along and told them to stop and they just left. He’s the leader of our little group now. I admire him and I follow his orders—he has his reasons for them. His best friend is Marco. It seems whenever they’re entering the barn—our official meeting place—he’s arguing with Jake about whether Batman can beat Superman. He’s the tactical genius of the group. Marco is the reluctant one and I thought his reasons were selfish at first but he’s still with us and I think he’s found something to fight for.
We decided to go home together because it was dark, then we met up with three girls: Rachel and her friends Cassie and Melissa. Rachel’s like Xena: Warrior Princess and Mrs. America put together. Regardless of what’s going down she’s always styling. Rachel and I have got a thing going. When I fly with Rachel I feel like everything is worth it. Lately we’d had our first kiss. It felt pretty good too.
Cassie’s her best friend and she’s the exact opposite. Overalls and a t-shirt with who knows what all over them. She’s dark-skinned and a little on the heavy side. She’s very kind and gentle and has this innate talent at reading people. Her parents own that barn—the Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic—where we meet. There’s all kinds of animals there and she knows a lot about them. And then there’s also Melissa Chapman, the quiet one. She knows Rachel because they share a common interest in gymnastics. Her parents are both Controllers. Her father Mr. Chapman is the vice principal of the school my friends go to and a high-ranking Yeerk.
It was dark outside so we chose to go through the abandoned construction lot. It’s like this ghost town of half-finished buildings and abandoned materials. I guess it was going to be a strip mall or something but they decided against it and just left it there to rot. It was there I saw a light in the sky that wasn’t a star and it turned out to be this alien’s ship. The alien came outside and gave his name as Elfangor; he was like nothing we’d ever seen. He was of a race called Andalites and they were fighting these things called Yeerks: parasitic slugs that take the minds of other creatures. He gave us a gift: the power to become any animal we touch.
He morphed away his injuries and turned into a human and hid with us as we watched Visser Three—the only Yeerk in the universe with an Andalite host—arrive and burn his ship. We saw the creatures the Yeerks had enslaved—the Hork-Bajir, the Taxxons and human beings. After that we went home and the days after investigated into the Yeerk presence on Earth, learning that Jake’s brother Tom and Melissa’s parents were Controllers, the Sharing was a front for Yeerk infestation and an entrance to the Yeerk Pool—a huge underground complex where Yeerks had to go every three days and feed or they’d die. Cassie got into a bit of trouble and was taken down to the pool. We sought to save her and maybe Tom too.
We learned this was bigger than we thought down in the pool and it was there that my life changed forever. See, I was in hawk form when we’d gotten into the pool and when the fight had broken out. But then Visser Three appeared and morphed some terrible fire-breathing monster and I had to hide else I’d be burned. I’d stayed too long in the red-tailed hawk morph and by the time I’d gotten out it was too late. Believe me I tried to return but I found I couldn’t. I told Jake the next morning.
And that’s why I was flying around searching for mice. I’m a hawk and I’ve grown to accept that I always will be a hawk. It took me a while to adjust at first though not too long ago I was visited by the Ellimist. He had me guide two free Hork-Bajir into a valley he’d created and hidden. He then gave me my powers back but had me keep my hawk body. However he let me acquire myself by sending me back in time. I still remember that dream. I will always remember that dream.
Elfangor came through to me with the truth: during his time on Earth he had had a son. That son of was me. At first I was angry at him for concealing it but then I felt a feeling of joy I hadn’t before. I had a father! He told me about my mother Loren and why she had given me up. Knowing my mother was a good person after all put me at ease. I acquired his younger brother Aximili—we’d saved him from under the sea a while back—and was granted my own personal Andalite form by the Ellimist. Elfangor and Ax taught me Andalite customs. But in the end I returned to my hawk form and took to my home, the skies.
We call our little group the Animorphs, short for Animal Morphers or as Marco would put it “idiot teenagers with a deathwish”. We are Earth’s last resistance against the Yeerks. Until the Andalite fleet arrives we will slow down the Yeerk’s operations here. The Yeerks think we are all Andalites. We keep this façade up, otherwise Visser Three might hunt the others’ families down.
The Animorphs are growing in number. We just added three to our ranks. Cathra’s an Andalite. She’s like Cassie in that when she morphs it’s not an eyesore. Her father’s a Controller, Visser Three to be exact. And Jamie is one of Rachel’s friends and I can see she’s more like I was before I became a hawk in that she was picked on and finally has something to live for. And then there’s Aura an independent girl with a bit of a temper. Her sister is a Controller.
Finally I spotted a rat. Or it wasn’t the rat I spotted but the rustling of papers. The rat came out and in his teeth there was a copper token from a Gardens ride. I glided down and effortlessly grabbed him and began to eat my meal.
